String tracking

Katie Van Dusen (violin) and Sarah Paquet (cello) have been hard at work recording strings for the record! Cello was tracked in a beautiful old theatre space built into St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Ypsilanti (big thanks to Jesse and Amy Morgan for facilitating). Violin for "Fox" and "Bear" was tracked at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, and "Wolf" was done a few days later at Huron Hills Church. We've captured some pretty gorgeous performances, not to mention some great natural reverb.

Guitar tracking

On February 20th I laid down guitar for "Bear," "Wolf," and "Winterfox," in an attic loft at Huron Hills Church in Ann Arbor. This room has a slanted wooden ceiling, making the room sound very "dead," with little or no flutter echo anywhere.

Eric Huntley was kind enough to engineer for me while I played. We kept it simple, and used two Shure KSM141's angled toward the neck. I tried a couple guitars, and ended up sticking with my S-6 throughout the entire session. Betsy provided the vibe candles.

Drum tracking

Drum tracking

On February 10th, we tracked drums for 3 of the tunes. Nick Rifken played drums, and brought a great deal of life and dynamics to the songs. Nick Nagurka, a superb audio engineer and great friend, helped a great deal with the miking.

We went for a 70's sound with our miking. SM57 on the snare, two kick mics, two overheads, and a ribbon mic in the room. Simple and clean.
